Aaron Small pitched decently over his five inings of work, but was haunted by poor Yankee defense (Derek Jeter made a crucial error which led to three runs). Erickson and Farnsworth could not hold the lead, but Rivera absolutely shut down the Tigers over a season-high, 3 innings of work.
Melky Cabrera hit from the leadoff spot for only the second time in his career and he hit his first major league triple, his second double, and two singles, driving in two runs. Jason Giambi was 0 for 5 with 3 strikeouts going into the 11th inning, but he sent a 1-2 pitch into the left-field stands to give the Yanks the lead. Bernie Williams had three hits including an RBI single in the 11th inning off of Detroit's closer, and Andy Phillips drove in a career-high 4 runs.
